Prisons Department
Materials for Prison
Industries.
Finance Committee has approved a supplementary provision of $400,000 for a new sub-head of Head 25 in the 1951/52 estimates and I seek your covering approval in accordance with the terms of your despatch No. 302 of 25th September, 1948.
2.
A substantial quantity of made-up goods is supplied by the Government Prison for the use of Gover- ment Departments. During the first three months of this year goods to the value of about $39,000 and $4,500 were supplied to departments and to the public respectively. Orders now in hand and anticipated future orders require the supply of raw materials to the value of $356,000.
3.
The present system whereby the raw materials for the prison industries were charged to the Prisons departmental vote for "Stores and Equipment" is unsatisfactory and a new sub-head of expenditure to which the cost of raw materials can be charged has therefore been provided.
